Sandwich
Sandwich, the oldest town on Cape
Cod, is often overlooked by visitors. This quaint and quiet
community has beautiful beaches, a charming village, and
historic sites unexplored by the majority of travelers coming to
the Cape. Those who do visit discover the village center’s
antiques shops, historic homes and museums as well as the
picturesque Shawme Pond, the site of working Dexter Grist Mill.
The Hoxie House, the oldest home on the Cape, The Thornton W.
Burgess Museum, and The Sandwich Glass Museum are just a few of
the many museums and sites to see in the historic center of
town. Vintage automobile fanatics and plant-lovers alike will
enjoy the Heritage Museums and Gardens.
Walk along
the Sandwich Boardwalk to Town Neck Beach, a public beach with
beautiful views of Cape Cod Bay. Along route 6A, also known as
Old King’s Highway, there are cranberry bogs, antiques shops,
and art studios. At the town line of Sandwich and Barnstable
you’ll find Sandy Neck Beaches, arguably one of the best on Cape
Cod.
Sandwich
is one of the Cape’s least explored destinations. There is
generally little traffic, and most of the residents live there
year-round. Anyone who appreciates history and undeveloped
beauty will enjoy Sandwich, but the kids tend to like the Mid
and Outer-Cape better. You won’t find any fast-food joints or
tacky restaurants in this refined town. Be sure not to miss out
on this historic beauty!
