Betsy's Diner

Falmouth, MA 02540

"Campy decorations and comfort food make Betsy’s Diner
a worthwhile (and inexpensive!) trip. Expect no-frills, not
gourmet. Although
certain elements of the eatery are on the tacky side, Betsy’s
never ceases to charm
its customers."

The essence of Betsy’s Diner is best captured by the neon sign
on the front door: "PAY LIGHT, EAT HEAVY." Laden with the scents
of meatloaf and macaroni, this breakfast and lunch joint offers
an escape to a simpler time. Betsy’s kitsch décor has the same
heartwarming effect as a good Leave it to Beaver episode, and
the melodies that pour from the jukebox similarly trigger a
nostalgia in members of the baby-boomer generation. My pigtailed
waitress certainly fit the scene of Betsy’s, but brought ‘50s
flair slightly too far when she started to unattractively smack
her gum and blow bubbles while writing up my BLT. She also
reasserted the EAT HEAVY theme by giving me an incredulous look
when I asked for light mayonnaise on my sandwich and a glass of
skim milk. Nonetheless, my meal was delicious, priced right, and
arrived in a short amount of time. Betsy’s location on
Falmouth’s main drag complements the
dining experience. The proximity to Main Street Falmouth opens
up opportunities for post-lunch shopping or strolling on the
Village Green. If you’re one to be caught up in the moment,
there’s even a boutique on Main Street devoted entirely to ‘50s
memorabilia that is sure to satiate all of your retro desires.
