Falmouth Heights Beach
Falmouth
June 20,
2006
If the breathtaking view of Martha's Vineyard
doesn't sell you on Falmouth Heights Beach, the smooth sand and
parallel avenue of stately Victorians surely will. Each year,
the Heights’s unprecedented beauty draws thousands of runners to
its coastlines for the Falmouth Road Race. Because it is
south-facing, Heights Beach has a slightly lesser nip than its
chilly counterparts on the National Seashore. While the
leisurely beach-goer delights in the warm water and tame waves,
wet-suit clad surfers will be disappointed in the calm seas.
Although there is no snack bar on the beach, The Windfall Market
is just a stone’s throw away, and poses a healthy and delicious
takeout option. During the daytime, Falmouth Heights is a hot
spot for families. However, at dusk, when the last sand toy has
been packed into the minivan, the Heights becomes a stage for
romantic strolls and cliché engagement proposals.
As if the attention from the Falmouth Road Race
isn’t enough, Falmouth Heights’s popularity is bolstered by its
close proximity to Main Street, the Shining Seas Bike Trail, and
an open green. For this reason, bustling Heights Beach is not a
“best-kept secret”: reading a paperback and taking a nap are
almost impossible.
